NAKSHATRAS AND THEIR IMPACT ON HUMAN LIFE

NAKSHATRAS AND THEIR IMPACT ON HUMAN LIFE
Nakshatras Just like the Rashis, the Nakshatras also break up the zodiac into equally spaced segments. There are 27 Nakshatras, each taking up 13'20". The Nakshatras are also called Lunar mansions, as the Nakshatra position of the Moon is an important use of Nakshatras. Each Nakshatra has a symbol, various attributes, and a planetary ruler. In order to clarify the use of Nakshatras, we will first explain the major differences between the use of Rashis and Nakshtras.

These are the 27 nakshatras and their dasha lords:
1. Ashwini
2. Bharani
3. Krittika
4. Rohini
5. Mrigashira
6. Ardra
7. Punarvasu
8. Pusya
9. Ashlesha
10. Magha
11. Poorva Phalguni
12. Uttara Phalguni
13. Hasta
14. Chitra
15. Swati
16. Vishaka
17. Anuradha
18. Jyestha
19. Moola
20. Poorvashadha
21. Uttarashadha
22. Shravana
23. Dhanishta
24. Shatabisha
25. Poorvabhadrapada
26. Uttarabhadrapada

27. Revati

For the purpose of Muhurta, the Brihat Samhita classifies the Nakshatras in some broad groups that characterize their nature. Each group is favorable for certain types of events, and these events give you a fairly good picture of the quality of that group:

Dhruva (fixed) Nakshatras

The three Uttaras and Rohini are called Dhruva or Fixed.
To be used for coronations, expiatory rituals, planting of trees, laying the foundation of towns, commencement of meritorious deeds, sowing seeds and other permanent things.

Tikshna/Daruna (dreadful) :

Mula, Ardra, Jyestha and Ashlesha.
These are good for success in attacks, incantations, raising of goblins, imprisonment of others, murder, separation of friends and alliance with kings and the like. So if you care for raising a goblin, wait until the Moon is in one of those nakshatras.

Ugra (Fierce)

The three Purvas (Purvaphalguni, Purvasadha and Purvabhadrapada), Bharani and Magha.
They are to be used with success in ruining enemies, destruction, deceit, imprisoning, poisoning, arson, striking with weapons and murders and the like.

Ksipra (Swift) :

Hasta, Ashwini, and Pushya (Abhijit too) They are beneficial for trade, sensual sports, education, decorations (or making ornaments), fine arts, skilled labor (like carpentry, smithy etc.), medical treatment, journey and the like (taking or giving loan etc.).

Mrdu (Tender) :

Anuradha, Chitra, Revati and Mrigasira.
They are used with advantage in making friends, sexual union, use of garments and ornaments, performance of auspicious ceremonies (like marriage, Upanayana and Cudakarana) and singing.

Mrdutikshna/ Sadharana (Tender-Dreadful) :

Krittika and Vishaka.
These yield mixed results. Cara (Temporary) Shrvana, Dhanistha, Shatabhisa, Punarvasu and Swati. These are beneficial for emphemoral things.

We will now elaborate on the details of each Nakshatra. Since there is no one, complete authentic source on Nakshatras, we have to gather our information from several sources. Parashara does not mention nakshatras for interpretive purposes at all.

The Brihat Samhita uses Nakshatras in various ways related to mundane astrology (part of the Samhita branch of Astrology). In the Brihat Jataka interpretations are given for the Moon in the various Nakshatras. Since the Moon rules the mind and emotions, the interpretations should be read as already being adjusted for the limitation of the Moon's significations. The full significance of the Nakshatra is greater than that.

Ashwini Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Ketu
Symbol : horse
HeadDeity : Ashwini Kumara (horse headed celestial physicians)
Brihat Samhita rulership : Horse-dealers, commandants, physicians, attendants, horses, horse riders, merchants, handsome persons and horse-grooms.
Moon in Ashwini : The person is a lover of show, fine clothes and ornaments. He has an attractive personality, is handsome and lovely, clever, skilful and intelligent.
Attributes: By the influence of this star the native is expected to be equestrian (horse-ride) or a soldier, also a physician with marvellous power to heal. The after-speak of physicians excellence or process. It is possible, in the horoscopes of these physicians it will be seen that the Graha for successful medical practice is positioned in Ashwini Nakshatra.
From Aswi is supposed to be derived carriages for animals for transport, everything related to transport and transport department. The Puranas relate that the two Aswini Kumaras were born of mother Sanga and father Ravi. The mother held the solar semen in her nostrils, for otherwise she could not hold it, it is so strong. They are the twins of Sanga and therefore this Nakshatra is supposed to produce twins, Mangal in this Nakshatra - specially if the Lagna is in Kumbha and Mangal in bhatristhan indicates twin brother and sister for the native. Or if Ravi, Guru or Pitri Karaka or lord of the Bhava signifying father or son in a similar way is in this Nakshatra then the father or any of the uncles or any of the children may be one of the twin.

Bharani Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Shukra (Venus)
Symbol : a vulvaDeity : Yama (the god of death)
Brihat Samhita Rulership : Those that feed on blood and flesh, cruel men, those that are engaged in killing, imprisonment and beating others, low-born persons, and those who are devoid of courage (character or nobility).
Moon in Bharani : The person is firm in his resolutions, truthful, healthy, dexterous, free from grief and happy.
Attributes : It is possible to have an idea of the nature of Bharani Nakshatra from the nature of Rahu, Mangal and Yama.
To take Rahu first,1. Rahu gives extravagant enjoyment of material pleasure and is later on the cause of sorrow,
2. Mangal gives courage, strength, exaltation and hope,
3. Yama gives purity, cleanliness, justice and integrity. The sense of restraint is also Yamas gift; he is the lord of Dharma, a stern disciplinarian, a ruthless expositor of truth, and a refuge for kings and law-abiding subjects.       We should not always confine his interpretation to his being only the lord of death; he is the great judicature, the ultimate dispenser of reward and punishment. The story of Yama-Nachiketa is a particular exposition of the hospitality of Yama, his sense of dharma and knowledge of it, his superb honesty and great integrity and other divine virtues. The Nakshatra of which he is the devata (God) is also in consequence the giver of whatever is good, pure, truthful and honest. The etymological meaning of Bharani is what deserves to be cultivated and preserved that is dependence, servitors, retainers or anything by which living is earned, for example salary.

Krittika Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Surya (Sun)
Symbol: sharp, razor like instrumentDeity : Agni (Fire god)
Rulership : White flowers, Brahmans who maintain and worship the sacred fire daily, those who know the sacred hymns and sacrificial rules, grammarians, miners, barbers, Brahmans, potters, priests and astrologers.
Moon in Krittika : The person has a great appetite, is drawn to improper sexual relations, is very energetic and will be famous.
Attributes : This is the birth star of Chandra. Many constellations gather at the tail end of Krithika group. It extends from Mesa 26'40". The residuary 10'00" degree fall in Vrishabha. Lord (Adhipati) is Mangal and Shukra. Agni is the great purifier, the great consumer of and the giver of light, heat and brightness. Agni causes the fire of life and the drive. It is also the spark of life. Without fire creation would not exist. Agni is at the base of creation and of the continuation of existence. It consumes everything. The fire of digestion in the human system and the external fire for cooking are only different manifestations of the same principle which is Agni. Agni is the symbol of brightness and brilliance, all weapons with fire-power. And other things of the same category come within the range of Krittika group. The fire is considered as purifier; for it burns away all that is wicked, dark and dull, also all that is low and sinful and inauspicious in the world. The dross thus blazed away, only effulgence and light remain. Fire gives the earth its activity and dynamismand revives it after the spells of cold that periodically inflict comatose condition of the earth. It is easy enough to deduce from fire the causal effect of the Krittika group. Mangal is the lord of that part of Krittika which is in Mesha Rashi and Mangal is like a mass of lightning in shining splendour. So, the Krittika in Mesa is devastatingly brilliant, the effulgence being closely associated with also an incendiary character. The Krittika of Vrishabha Rashi is brilliant but unlike the Krittika of Mesha, not incendiary. The lord of Vrishabha Rashi is brilliant but unlike the Krittika of Mesha, not incendiary. The Lord of Vrishabha Rashi is Shukra and Shukra stands for worship of beauty and for poetry and imagination. He is radiantly white like snow, the Kunda flower and the Utpal. He is also the encyclopaedic expounder of all branches of learning. It follows that the Krittika of Vrishabha is brilliant but the brilliance does not burn, it is soft and sweet, and benign. The Krittika of Mesha Rashi is doubtless brilliant, it has plenty of heat which burns. The Krittika of Vrishabha has on the contrary a softened radiance, a wave of brightness that does not hurt.

Rohini Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Chandra (Moon)
Symbol : a cartDeity : Brahma (the Creator)
Rulership : Observers of vows, merchandises, kings, wealthy persons, Yogis, cartmen, cows, bulls, aquatic animals, husbandmen, mountains and men in authority.
Moon in Rohini : One is truthful and pure, holding no secrets, speaks sweetly and compellingly, of steady mind and heart, and handsome.
Attributes : The word is derived from Rohan which means to rise or to bring into existence. It extends in the Vrishabha Rashi from 10'00" degrees to 23'20". Rohini- group therefore encompasses everything that comes within the range of creation - beasts, birds, animals etc. It would also connote the process of growing, begetting, birth, production etc, in brief production, birth and creation. Rising means process of ascending, that is to say the creative evolution, the cultivation and the improvement. Mythology describes Rohini the wife of Chandra. Of all the 27 Stars-all wives of Chandra-Rohini is said to have been fond of fine dress, cosmetics and decor and was the most beloved of Chandra. The Rohini (group) is, in the line with this, considered to be the cause of a taste for fine dress, perfume, and other articles of toilet. Creation continues to exist mainly on the basis of food; and Rohini is supposed to be the cause of food. The direct and immediate cause of food is Agni and Brahma the remote cause. From this point of view the God who gives food, that is Agni, is the spiritual principle of Rohini (group) Nakshatra and because, Brahma the remote cause of food is also the Devata of Rohini; the range of influences of this group runs over the whole gamut of the visible and invisible animal world.

Mrigashira Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Mangal (Mars)
Symbol : deerDeity : Chandra (the Moon)
Rulership : Fragrant articles, garments, aquatic products, flowers, fruits, gems, foresters (or forest dwellers), birds, beasts, those who partake in Soma juice (in sacrifices), musicians, lovers and carriers of letters.Moon in Mrigashira : One is fickle minded, ingenious, shy, energetic, wealthy and a great epicure.
Attributes : Mrigashira Nakshatra extends from 23'20" inVrishabha Rashi up to 6'40" in Mithun. The word Mriga represents forests, gardens, asearch, a seeking to find, to roam about in the forests and a hunter, toseek, to blaze the trail, a guide, preceptor, an erotic affair, beauty of the countenance with particular emphasis on the radiant lustre of the face, because of Chandra. To seek as the primary characteristic of the star, to discover hidden treasures after the churning of the Sea, the Samudra Manthan of the Hindu Mythology, the mother, motherly conduct that is to say maternal instincts, self-sacrifice without hope of requital etc. Chandra is the lord of the mind, so all mental attitude, good or bad, sympathies and antipathies, patience and impatience, the fidgetiness and placidity, imagination, the gift of poetry, purity, sweetness and light, physical and mental aspects, all these come within this star and when things of sweetness and light of physic as also of the mind, both derivatives from Chandra, the horoscope of Rabindra Nath comes to mind. His Janma Lagna was Meena with Chandra there and Guru was in Karkata Rashi. Because of this yoga Rabindra Nath had something like physical translucence which was object of admiration all the world over, wherever people met. Also, at the same time his poetry enthralled the whole world. Chandra is a sub-Graha around the earth and that is why the influence of Chandra on all that happens in the earth is so paramount. And again that is why the influence of Chandra on both the body and mind is simultaneously so very great. Shukra and Chandra both are female grahas (planets) with the difference that while Chandra is the Lord of motherhood and maternal instincts, Shukra is the lord of feminine beauty, the structure of feminine form, the physical excellence of women and all. In the former, there is elegance and dignity of the female while in the latter, the physical beauty and the lure of feminine form which leads a male captive, dominates. Chandra is the lord of marine products and of medicines; that it was from the sea that Chandra rose. And it is to Chandra that the influences and causalities have to be traced.

Ardra Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Rahu
Symbol : teardrop
Deity : Isa (a god associated with wind and destruction)
Rulership : Murderers, animal catchers, liars, adulterers, thieves, rogues, creators of discord, cruel persons, charmers, sorcerers, those well versed in the art of raising goblins.
Moon in Ardra : The person is deceitful and haughty, ungrateful, cruel, mischievous and vicious.
Attributes : Ardra nakshatra extends in Mithun from 6'40" to 20'00" The lord of Ardra is Budha. When Surya enters Ardra, the earth is said to be starting its menstrual course, that is Ambobachi. Ardra means wet or surcharged with water. Because the earth is running her menstrual course there are tear drops falling one after another. From Rudra comes all suffering, persecutions and oppressions, anger,, ferocity of countenance or hideousness of noise. Rudra is another name of Shiva, the Five Faced (Panchanana). In knowledge, asceticism, renunciation, as also in enjoyment, he is the supreme consummation of all desires. He is a blue-throated one, the wielder of the most tremendous powers, what could not be attempted, far less achieved by other Gods, when the churned Ocean at the time of Samudra Manthan exhaled poison Siva achieved quite simply by holding the exhalation in his throat. On one side he is the symbol of the most perfect placidity and serenity, on the other hand he is the symbol of all that is terrible. He holds the great serpent on his head and on his forehead crescent Chandra with his sweet-soft light. He is at the same time the most peaceful and also the most terrible. And in all these are to be traced the intrinsic characteristics of Ardra. Superficially, on the surface of it, Ardra stands for suffering, hardness, cruelty, murder, prison, theft, adultery etc. The root characteristic is oppression-in order to purify. All male kidney trouble and connected urethral disease comes within the jurisdiction of Ardra; so also uterine diseases of the female. Anthropomorphically it is the skull of kalapurush and the hair on it.

Punarvasu Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Guru (Jupiter)
Symbol : a quiver of arrowsDeity : Aditi (a feminine goddess frequently associated with infinity and unboundedness)
Rulership : the truthful, generous, pure (clean), high-born, handsome, intelligent, famous, the rich, best varieties of cereal, merchants, servants, and artisans.Moon in Punarvasu : The person will keep his mind away from doing wrong, is happy, good natured, humble, of dull intellect, sickly, thirsty, and is satisfied with even a little.
Attributes : Spread from 20'00" degrees Mithun up to 3'20" Karkata. The word Punarvasu is derived from Puna+Vasu, which means return, renewal, restoration or repetition. The 12 Adityas were born of Kashyapa in the womb of Aditi. The 12 Vasus are Indra, Vishnu, Vaga, Twashta, Varun, Aryamana, Pusa, Mitra, Agni, Parjyanya, Vivaswan and Dinakar. The mother Aditi of whom the Gods are born is the repository of everything good - truth, generosity, magnanimity, purity, aristocracy, beauty and renown. It follows that this star is the cause for these virtues.   To start afresh after having once broken off, to start a new life, to come back from a distant land-all these are signified by Punarvasu. It stands for freedom from restriction and limitation, and boundless space. The Gods, the children of Aditi, are basically and essentially are different from children of Diti, who are demons. The demons never had a taste of divine nectar and therefore miss the knowledge of fundamentals, and the fundamentals of creation and mystery. They were engrossed with or deeply emerged in enjoyment of the externals, the materialistic aspect of the universe. Gold and sex were the two immediate pursuits, which made them extroverts. The Gods however, could rip into the deeper texture of things, they had tasted the divine nectar and become partners in supreme divine bliss and Punarvasu represents all these.

Pushya Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Shani (Saturn)
Symbol : UdderDeity : Jiva (another name for Jupiter)
Rulership : Barley, wheat, rice, sugarcane, forests, ministers, kings, fisherman and the like, virtuous men, and those that are engaged in big and small sacrifices.Moon in Pushya : The person has a calm and settled nature, looks lovely, is well versed in the shastras, wealthy, religious, and observes religious rites and ceremonies.
Attributes : Spread from 3'20" to 16'40" Karkata. The word Pushya etymologically means to nourish and that again means to preserve, to protect, replenish, multiply and strengthen.Everything of the very best comes within the scope of this Star. Enjoyment of wealth and prosperity follows from it. Guru is described as the great teacher of all creation from amoebae to the Gods and is the source of all knowledge and wisdom. The mystery of creation is no mystery to him. He is the eloquent preceptor, the wise minister, pontifex, head of all religious ceremonies. He takes pleasure in all worshipful ritual. And that is why the Pusya is composed of these virtues. It has been described as blossoming and flourishing. It is the mouth of Orien.

Ashlesha Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : Budha (Mercury)
Symbol : a coiled serpentDeity : Sarpa (a divine snake)Rulership : artificial things, bulbs, roots, fruits, insects, reptiles, poison, robbers, cereals, all classes of physicians.
Moon in Ashlesha : The person cheats, eats all kinds of food, does evil deeds, is wily and treacherous.
Attributes : Spread from 16'40" to 30'00" degree Karkata. Chandra is the lord. It is the birth star of Ketu. Symbol-coiled up snake. It is the nature of a snake to hide himself, to encircle and entwine, to creep on the chest, to embrace, and to enjoy or unite surreptitiously. All this is an attribute of Ashlesha also. The cunningness of the serpent, its devious nature, the burning sensation of poison and pain along with all consequences that poison connotes are to be read in the constitution of Ashlesha. The virtues and vices of the serpent are all in it. Chandra in Ashlesha sicklier with various faults in great intensity. Whoever would have his or her karmapathi (Lord of the 10th house) or bhagyapathi (Lord of the 9th house) in this star would run the risk of having all his or her principal acts in life handicapped, jeopardised or spoiled by many kinds of danger and obstruction. If the Lagna is in this star, the native would possibly be of wily disposition. Such people would like to work in secret and their words would carry the sting of poison.

Magha Nakshatra

Dasha ruler : KetuSymbol : a royal throne roomDeity : the Pitras (one's family ancestors)
Rulership : People rich in gold (money), and corn, granaries, mountaineers, those who are devoted to parents or the manes, traders, heroes, carnivorous beings and women-haters.
Moon in Magha : The person will have many servants and wealth, enjoys the senses, is devoted to the devas and ancestors and is very enthusiastic.
Attributes : Spread from 0'00" degree to 13'20" Simha. The virtues and vices of the father's family, wealth, glory, beauty, strength and prowess, lustre and effulgence, superior qualities, sharpness of intellect, nobility, prestige, replenishment, and increased wisdom, brilliance, capacity and willingness to donate, ancestors on the paternal side-all these are effected by Magha. In no star is the position of Ravi so magnificent and dignified. Ravi in "Ashwini" is brilliant no doubt but the brilliancy is of incendiary character. It burns everything about it. Surya is then a terrible ball of fire. But in Magha Ravi is like an emperor, confident and self-assured. If happy and pleased he is in a mood to make any benediction or gift. When Ravi is in Magha, Shani gets alarmed and that is natural. For Shani is by   character, of a mean disposition, the nature of a slave, no wonder that mean and lowly Shani cannot brook the beauty and the dignity of the position of Ravi in Magha. That is why Shani is "Neecha" and anti-meridional in Ashwini and meanness and wilyness of Shani increases. If Shani is the lord of 9th and 10th houses and is placed in the 4th house and associated with Magha, he adversely influences the effects of the 4th and 10th houses. Magha is the cause of brightness and light. Therefore old and gloomy Grahas cannot stand it. Magha stands for noble impulses and incentives, the gift of Magha must always be a noble one. Magha has been described as glorious one. Anthropomorphically it is the nose of Kalpurusha.

The origin of creation, it signifies coming into being and development. Its closure means destruction. The individual in personal life succeeds in mastering the six impulses, specially the impulse of creativity which also masters death. Therefore, on the one hand this star symbolises the joy of creation and enjoyment, and on the other hand signifies desirelessness and asceticism. On the one hand it is the gateway to creation and its basic seed, on the other hand it aims at renunciation, dissolution, and a merger in 'Brahma'. Fame and renown are the special features of this star. Poorva Falguni and Uttara Falguni are symbols of good fortune and luck. It is the birth star of Guru. From the Surya we derive creativity and creation, and from creation we derive light, lustre, and strength. Surya is the prime cause of dominion, kingship, power of immunity and the light that dispels darkness. Budha is the cause of knowledge. If placed in this star he sheds light all around. Ravi with this Nakshatra enhances the instinct of dominion and the capacity to rule over others. It brushes up human intelligence, making it more luminous and makes a man vibrant with life and light. The symbol is a closed hand or fist. It would follow that this signifies determination and clenched resolution. To keep everybody within one's grip, the possessive instinct follows from the nature of this star. The art of construction, the art of engraving, embroidery, frame-making and everything that constitutes an artistic complex from fine embroidery to the Tajmahal and on the other hand industrial engineering and skill and the organisation of machinery and plants - everything is caused or influenced by Chitra. Restlessness disposition or physical restlessness, inability to stay still at any place, fidgetiness, and noise comes from the attributes of its deity the wind. It is self-assured and asserting. The winds (Marut) are the Lords of North-West. There are 49 of them under 'Pavana'. Of all Gods he is the strongest and most obstinate. From these are derived the knowledge, the physical internal adjustments of the 5 Winds - Pan, Apan, Vyan, Udan and Saman. Also from this comes the storms and the whirl-wind, the concrete disturbance of the atmosphere, A person born under this star is good at buying and selling, his wealth and property comes and goes quite easily. He is an independent sort of man, always striving for more independence. Asceticism is yet another attribute of this star. Diseases of the wind are to be treated in reference to this . Another name of this Star is Radha, a compliment to Anuradha, the birth star of Surya. From this is derived the fulfilment of action, variety of enterprise, achievement irrespective of the means employed and fearless and unscrupulous pursuit of self-interest. The only objective is to reach the end justifying it by any means fair or foul. Real friendship hardly happens. A man born under this star works at various things but hardly concentrates on any one of them. To spread about and to dissipate is another attribute of this star. The native of this star aims at success and is pleased with it when it happens, nothing else matters. Among other attributes may be mentioned obedience to religious injunctions, quickness of the uptake, and also loss and disaster from enemies , sometimes even death or lunacy.

The difference between Vishakha and Anuradha is that while the Vishakha-native forgets the benefits derived and also the persons who helped attain success, but the Anuradha-native retains a soft feeling about them and he keeps his friendship intact and does not forget the benefits. The Anuradha-native's mind is always alive and receptive to all feelings and gestures of friendship and love.
